All students on a student visa are required to have a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) at all times.
If your student visa expires before the next official result release date then you will need to order your CoE. This is so that you can apply for a new student visa with the Department of Home Affairs in order to continue your current course of study.
A CoE is needed to renew your student visa, but it’s also a very important document. Your CoE shows the Department of Home Affairs your current enrolment status. If your CoE has finished or is cancelled, the Department of Home Affairs is notified that you are no longer studying.
What is COE (Confirmation of Enrolment) ?
Your Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) affirms you have been acknowledged into a course enlisted under the Commonwealth Register of Institutions of Courses (CRICOS). The COE will be an online code that you should go into the fitting area in the online visa application.
If you are not convinced with your institute’s decision, then you can file an appeal to the government complaint handling body. Such as Overseas Student Ombudsman or the State or Territory Ombudsman.

If you are not able to complete your studies within the expected duration, you will need to apply for a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and may also need to apply for a new student visa.
Do I need a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) if I change my Course or college?
Yes, of course. But only when you get confirmation for change of course.
You will only be required to submit your new CoE to the Department of Home Affairs if:
- Your visa is close to expiring and you need to apply to extend your current student visa, or
- The change of program results in a change to your visa subclass.
Can I apply for a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) to extend my stay in Australia?
Any college or institute can only provide a new COE in a limited circumstances.
- Compelling or concerned circumstances (e.g. medical certificate, if you have failed some courses)
- When the college, as part of implementing its intervention strategy for students at risk of not meeting suitable course, recommends an extension of the study period.
- When an approved deferment or suspension of study has been granted.

I am an international student. Do I need to apply for a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) if I am taking a leave of absence?
If you cannot complete your Course by the end date of your CoE then yes, you will need to apply for a new CoE.
1. Apply to extend your CoE
If you are overseas you should apply at least 3 months before your student visa expiry date.
If you are in Australia, you should apply at least 1 month before your student visa expiry date.
2. Apply to extend your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
You will need to extend your OSHC to cover the period of your new Student Visa. Contact Rapid Education and visa consultants to extend your cover and provide evidence of your OSHC to the Department of Home Affairs with your new student visa application.
3. Apply to extend your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Please note that a new CoE does not mean an extension of your student visa. After receiving your new CoE, you will need to lodge an application for a new student visa with the Department of Home Affairs .
